Poems of Akhmatova
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (June, 1973)
Authors: Stanley Kunitz, Anna Andreevna Akhmatova, and Max Hayward
Average review score:

An outstanding translation of a marvelous poet
This is a marvelous book. It is extremely difficult to accurately capture the flavor of the original writing in translation, but Kunitz has done this and more - the English itself is poetry. The book is dual language, so readers of Russian can read the original next to the English. Both are excellent.

The selection is fairly representative of Akhmatova's life work, with early poems from 1909, through her affair with the poet Blok in the teens, the Terror and War, to her deathbed in 1961. I particularly enjoyed the translation of the epic "Requiem". Without a doubt, this is the best English version I have ever read. My only complaint is its berevity - at 40 poems, it merely whets the readers appetite for more - a pity, given the outstanding nature of both poet and translator.

For those who are not familiar with Anna Akhmatova, this is a gem. If you have read some of her work, this is a must-have volume. Enjoy!

The perfect introductory volume.........
This is the volume that introduced me to the works of Anna Akhmatova. After having read this in one evening, I could not sleep - I was so moved by her poetry. The translation must have captured her heart and soul because it certainly captured mine - it inspired me to get up in the middle of the night and draw pictures to go with what I had read. I understood at once the love the Russian people have for her. Since then, I have gobbled up everything translated into English that I can find, but I still think this little volume is the best of all and return to it again and again. Enjoy......

Prime Time: The Lobels' Guide to Great Grilled Meats
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (01 May, 1999)
Authors: Evan Lobel, Leon Lobel, Stanley Lobel, Evan Lobel, and Mark Lobel
Average review score:

Such a unique grilling book
The Lobels' have introduced a very nice and unique cookbook with the release of this one. I own several other grilling cookbooks, and there are many good ones out there. This one is my absolute favorite because the recipes are a little more than your basic grilled steak or hamburger. Try the grilled filet mignon with gorgonzola-scallion compound butter and the sirloin steak with rosemary brushed potatoes and red peppers. Don't forget to try the barbeque sauce. It's fantastic. The book's contents include tips on grilling, burgers, beef and veal, lamb and pork, poultry, game and game birds, and sauces, salsas, maranades, rubs and other condiments. There are no fish recipes so if you are looking for that specifically, find another cookbook. If everything else sounds good to you, you will enjoy this inovative book by the Lobels'.

This book is the best source for grilling meat.
Finally! A book that really tells us everything we need and want to know about grilling meat. As author of 3 cookbooks on grilling, including "Marinades, the Secret of Great Grilling", I can tell you that I am buying this book for everyone I know who grills meat - and that is just about everyone I know. It's so well organized that I can find information at a glance. The recipes are readable, do-able, and taste terrific.

Pursuing Happiness
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (12 July, 1993)
Author: Stanley Lebergott
Average review score:

Geat book from a very unique perspective
Actually had Stan the Man as a professor at Wesleyan - frankly a bit on the dry side - but always full of fascinating facts and information. And he was always willing to chide the "life was better 100 years ago" nonsense.

As a writer and economist he is GREAT and this book is so clear and full of smart common sense thinking it is scary to think that for a lot of people it is full of revelations that challenge the group think. If you like economics and history you can't miss this.

Fascinating Information; Superbly Written
Stanley Lebergott has earned a reputation as one of America's foremost economic historian. He is a first-rate economist; he writes beautifully and cleverly; he is learned; and his subjects are germane.

PURSUING HAPPINESS is a terrific book. Lebergott reviews the history of consumption opportunities under capitalism. Like Julian Simon, and Mike Cox & Rick Alm, he finds that the material well-being of ordinary Americans has skyrocketed during the 20th century. To compare American living standards at the close of the 20th century to those at the beginning of the 20th century is to discover an explosion of wealth so vast that we who today enjoy this astonishing wealth can scarcely imagine what life was like for our ancestors of just 100 years ago.

Today, we have many more things -- and much more time (both because we live longer and because we have more leisure), improved health, greater learning, and a richer menu of entertainments. Lebergott shows also that capitalism has been especially good for the working classes and for women. For example, he documents the extraordinarily burdensome and time-consuming tasks that nearly all women 100 years ago did routinely to keep their households running. Today, almost all such tasks are farmed out or mechanized. (In one of his many brilliant lines, Lebergott notes that "By the 1980s, only a handful of hippies expected their womenfolk to haul water from the brook or well.")

No one who comments upon the course of the American economy should be without this book.

Pursuits of Happiness: The Hollywood Comedy of Remarriage
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (March, 1984)
Author: Stanley Cavell
Average review score:

A great book for lovers of classical American movies.
The goal of this book is to show that the classic American film comedies of the 30's and 40's are worthy of the best criticism. The author succeeds. If you love movies, and want to think about them seriously, this is your book. The films in it star Hepburn, Grant, Tracy, Gable, Stanwyck. This is a sophisticated book for a sophisticated film audience. The author is one of America's leading philosophers. Cavell brings his knowledge of concepts of friendship, conversation, gender, parenting, sexuality, fun, and adventure to bear on each of the romantic comedies he discusses. The genre explored here continues in GROUNDHOG DAY, FLIRTING WITH DISASTER, WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, ALL OF ME, JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO. This book is serious, and well worth it. It explores everything important to every romantic relationship. I highly recommend it to everyone.

A critical appreciation of film's greatest romantic comedies
Cavell identifies the "comedies of remarriage," those romantic comedies and comic romances that lit the screens and the hearts of the audiences of the 1930's and 40's. With the mind of a philosopher and scholar and the passionate appreciation of a true fan, he examines classic romantic comedies (and comic romances), including "The Lady Eve," "The Awful Truth," and "The Philadelphia Story." In a classical context (he compares the role of the woods in Shakespeare to the role of Connecticut in "Bringing Up Baby") he manages to illuminate the films without disturbing the gossamer that holds them together. The best that can be said is that he does justice to these lovely films, and makes us understand how smart we were to adore them

Quick & Easy Diabetic Recipes For One
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Distributed Products (01 December, 1997)
Authors: Kathleen Stanley, Connie Crawley, and Connie Crowley
Average review score:

Actually Edible Recipies!
I've been suckered into getting a lot of cookbooks that call for ingredients that I would not give to my dog. In fact, the dog wouldn't even eat some of the "healthy, yummy, tasty, etc." leftovers from some books.

Every recipie I have made in this book tastes good, helps me to control my diabetes, and actually looks so good my husband (who isn't diabetic) asks if he can have some. You can easily double the recipies for another person, or use the "leftovers" for a great lunch. No muss, no fuss cooking that doesn't make you turn your kitchen into a restaurant.

I wish there were more books like this. (The only one that is close so far is Snack Nibble Nosh...by Ruth Glick, if you want to buy a 2nd book & get 2x as many great recipies!)

good food done right
I got this cookbook from the VA on loan. I am from the south and this book is right down my ally. I love the food and the ease of preparation that is shows. I have been cooking for 3 years am not very good. I made 15 of these meals and loved everyone of them but one. I substituted my leftovers for the food called for. I made breakfast in under 30 minutes three morning in a row. Lunch was an snap. and dinner was jsut fabulous and quick to make, under 45 minutes. This includeed the prep time also. Chopping diceing slicing. And very good book. rhodson

Average review score:

Gosh, A must buy for crossword fans.
I rarely solved sunday crosswords--- it took too much time. But puzzles in this gorgeous book are so good that I can not help but looking up my dictionary and encyclopedia over and over, trying hard but happily to fill each box. This book contains not only tremendous number of puzzles(500 in all!) but also in very high quality. Let me introduce first pages: the puzzle no.1 is by Mike Shenk, no.2 by Merl Reagle, no.3 by Trip Payne, no.4 by Stanley Newman, the incredible editor of this book, himself, no.5 is by David A. Rosen.... These names are so thunderous and famous in this field. I adore Stanley Newman for editing such a high-level collection of puzzles, offering endless joy for crossword fans.

Contemporary Masterpiece
It's a great collection of puzzles not only in sheer quantity but quality as well at an almost unheard of price (less than 4 cents/puzzle!). These puzzles are a great example of the new breed of constructors who rely more on clever wordplay than arcane knowledge. The difficult, on average, is a little less challenging than the normal Sunday NY Times. Stanley Newman shows again why he is one of the most respected crossword puzzle editors and a very fine constructor in his own right.

Rising Above Shame: Healing Family Wounds to Self Esteem
Published in Paperback by Launch Press (01 October, 1991)
Authors: Stanley D. Wilson and John Bradshaw
Average review score:

Absolutely amazing!
This book has helped me more than any other book I have read related to recovery from childhood wounds. My addiction to books led me to read hundreds of books on recovery issues (especially when I was going through my own discovery phase of recovery from childhood physical, psychological, emotional and sexual wounds, including just about every book on shame ever written (I admire John Bradshaw's work as well). I highly recommend this book to all of the ladies that I sponsor in recovery and I have purchased a copy of it for my counselor who has a love of books as well. I have not seen anything like this book. Reading through the material related to each of the 12 "shaming messages" increased my awareness 10 fold and helped me to identify with the core beliefs that I held about myself for so long. God bless Dr. Wilson! Phenomenal book!

Finally! A clear understanding of SHAME.
This is an excellent book. It is not just for academics. It is for everyone. This is a book that gives insight, understanding, and strength to it's readers. Read this book. Your worth it!

Road of Science and the Ways to God
Published in Paperback by Scottish Academic Pr (August, 1980)
Author: Stanley Jaki
Average review score:

Surprised this book has not generated more controversy
I am surprised this book has not generated more controversy because it attacks some dearly held beliefs of "modern" folks.

Basically what this guy says is that science has been stillborn in many cultures and that the Christian world view (or it's wreckage) has been the only culture that will tolerate more than a century or two of scientific progress

It will be interesting to see what happens as western culture abandons it's Christian worldview. Will the west join the long parade of failures, like the ones Jaki catalogs in numbing detail or will the west 'evolve' into an atheistic, materialistic paradise like the one portrayed in "Star Trek"?

This book is for scholars and teachers.
Don't try to read more than two paragraphs at a time or your head will explode. Stanley Jaki is mandatory for folks interested in history, philosophy, religion, or just being obnoxiously well read and well thought out. If you've read this book, you're ready to go on to other subjects and other languages. You're done with English. Highly recommended.
